HELP Testimony. On April 9, Dr. Dobson testified before the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) - Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging. The hearing topic was “Addressing Primary Care Access and Workforce Challenges.” A text version of Dr. Dobson’s testimony is available on InsuranceNewsNet.com, and a video is available on the CCNC website.

AccessCare wins National Rural Health Award.  CCNC was honored again this week when AccessCare of the Blue Ridge was selected by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust as the 2014 winner of the Rural Health Award for their program pairing college interns from Appalachian State’s College of Health Sciences with rural medical practices.  Kudos to the team at AccessCare!

CCNC participates in Healthcare Media Summit.  The NC Medical Society and NC Press Association jointly hosted an event on Wednesday to help connect healthcare reporters and medical experts, and to examine the current state of healthcare reporting in North Carolina. Topics included the decline in newspaper and broadcast resources dedicated to healthcare and the growing tendency for non-media sources (think tanks, corporations, etc.) to drive healthcare coverage and debate.  

Media panelists included Mark Binker of WRAL, Jay Price of the Raleigh News & Observer, Rose Hoban of NC Healthcare News, Sarah Avery of Duke Medical Center News Office and Mark Holmes of the Sheps Center. Health reform panelists were Dr. Grace Terrell of Cornerstone Health Care, Julian "Bo" Bobbitt of Smith Anderson, Mardy Peal with NC DHHS, State Rep. Nelson Dollar, State Senator Louis Pate and Paul Mahoney of CCNC. Video of the Media Panel and Reform Panel is available on WRAL.com.

Project Lazarus. Project Lazarus recently placed a prescription drug drop box at the Avery County Sheriff’s Office. Read more here

NC Medicaid Reform. The DHHS Joint Legislative Oversight Committee held a meeting April 17 to provide an update that included North Carolina's Medicaid program. Relevant coverage of the meeting can be found here.

CCNC, Inc. Board. Robert A. Ingram was appointed to the CCNC, Inc. Board of Directors. Mr. Ingram, General Partner at Hatteras Venture Partners, brings years of pharmaceutical and healthcare experience. Check out Mr. Ingram in the Triangle Business Journal.

Publications 

Urban Institute. The Urban Institute recently released three papers on Community Health Workers. One paper, “Integrating Community Health Workers into a Reformed Health Care System,” references a 2009 article by Dr. Dobson and Denise Levis Hewson on CCNC’s Medical Home Model. The article’s writers also spent several days with the staff of the Division of Community Health.

Strategic Planning Seminar. Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business is hosting Strategic Planning for the Future of Health Care, a 3-day Executive Education course that will challenge participants to think more strategically and creatively about how their business can continue to prosper in health care's new landscape. CTG Action Institute. The NC Community Transformation Grant Project (CTG Project) has been working across the state to build capacity at the community level for preventing chronic disease, promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing health disparities, and controlling health care spending. CTG Project strategies, successes and lessons learned will be highlighted during the upcoming Action Institute on May 20-22 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in Durham, NC. Cone Health Patient Education Summit. On Friday, April 11 Moses Cone Hospital will host an interdisciplinary conference to identify strategies for overcoming barriers and challenges in patient education and healthcare literacy. For details, go to the AHEC site

AHEC CE Workshop. The Charlotte AHEC Center for Learning @ Development will host “Leadership Strategies for Reducing Avoidable Hospital Readmissions” on Wed., April 22 from 9-4 p.m. The event will provide hospital leadership and clinicians both technical and behavioral strategies to reduce avoidable readmissions that impact both the quality of care and reduce the financial impact of hospital readmissions. Infographic. A new infographic detailing how CCNC improves quality and reduces cost in North Carolina is now featured on the CCNC homepage – check it out! The infographic is a great introduction to CCNC for those unfamiliar with our organization.

NC HIE. NC HIE has launched a monthly e-newsletter that will be distributed on the first of every month. NC HIE e-News aims to provide a monthly summary of NC HIE news, current initiatives and related health care topics. To view the April 2014 NC HIE e-newsletter, click here. IEI Webinar. The Institute for Emerging Issues, in partnership with Duke University’s Sanford School and Center for Child and Family Policy, hosted a webinar, Strengthening Health Systems in Resource-Limited Areas — Lessons from rural South Africa and rural North Carolina. CCNC’s Dr. Chip Watkins presented on the Multi-Payer Advanced Primary Care Practice “demonstration project” and the PCMH model. To view his presentation, click here.

NCDOJ Grant Opportunities. The NCDOJ Consumer Protection Division has released information about 2014 grants available for health and consumer protection programs. Funds have been used in the past to educate consumers, support local food banks, help struggling homeowners, and give patients access to needed medicines. Pinwheels at P4CC. In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Partnership for Community Care planted a Pinwheel Garden. Shining in the sun, the pinwheel is reflective of the bright future all children deserve.

AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps members and their sponsors from Community Care of Wake and Johnston Counties met with Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane in honor of the Mayor's Day of Recognition for National Service.
